Penetrating Dampness in Welsh Homes 🌧️ Living Penetrating Dampness in Welsh Homes 🌧️
Living in South Wales means a constant fight against wind and rain! Moisture that makes its way into your home from the outside is called penetrating dampness.

From missing roof tiles and cracked render to ageing guttering or porous stonework, there are plenty of ways water can sneak in. Left unchecked, penetrating damp can lead to stained walls, musty smells, mould growth and, in the worst cases, rot in structural timbers.

🔎 How to spot penetrating dampness:
• Damp patches or brown staining on walls and ceilings
• Cracks around windows, doors or external walls
• Leaking gutters or downpipes
• Missing or damaged roof tiles
• Musty odours, black mould or warped skirting boards

🛠️ How to prevent it:
• Keep gutters and downpipes clear, especially in autumn 🍂
• Check your roof regularly from the ground or loft
• Inspect external walls for cracks or hollow render
• Seal small gaps around window frames
• Keep an eye on plumbing connections and appliance pipes (so you’re not getting dampness from inside your home too)

👉Act quickly

Don’t ignore any type of dampness. Damp issues rarely fix themselves and are far easier (and cheaper!) to tackle early. Penetrating dampness is very common and can cause major issues, so we look for it during every survey.
