Celebrating the RICS Patron’s Platinum Jubilee

Ever since August 1881 when it was incorporated by Royal Charter, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has been proud to support it’s royal Patrons, currently Her Majesty The Queen.

From the Silver Jubilee in 1977 onwards, the RICS have had a tradition of lighting commemorative beacons.  As such, to help celebrate and mark this year’s royal milestone, the RICS have been asked to take part in the Platinum Jubilee Beacons by lighting an “Anchor Chain” of 43 beacons across the UK.  In total over 1500 beacons will be lit across the UK and the Commonwealth, but the RICS Anchor Chain Beacons will have the honour of being the first to be lit in the UK, at 9.30pm on the 2nd June.

Some of the RICS beacons are located at special or private sites around the country where attendance is by invitation only.  However, many are open to the public including one here in Wales at Amroth Beach in Pembrokeshire. There are lots of other Beacons being lit across the whole of South Wales as public events, including one at the Pierhead Building, Cardiff Bay where there will also be music and fireworks to enjoy.

Locally there is plenty to enjoy over the extended Platinum Jubilee weekend.  Rhondda Cynon Taff Council have received more than 190 applications for street party road closures and the popular Aberdare Festival in Aberdare Park has been extended to run over 2 days on the 3rd – 4th June.  The event offers free family fun and entertainment including live music, outdoor cinema, circus skills and dinosaurs!  There are also RCT Platinum Jubilee Trails at various locations around the Borough, including the Dare Valley Country Park and the Ynysangharad War Memorial Park.  These trails are interactive walks using QR codes as you go, to learn about the Queen’s 70 years as Monarch.

In Cardiff, there is a Platinum Jubilee Concert in Cardiff Castle on the 4th June from 3.30 to 10pm, with lots of great Welsh singers and entertainers hosted by Aled Jones and Shan Cothi, and the Big Jubilee Picnic takes place in Bute Park on Sunday 5th June from 12 – 5pm.

However you decide to spend the long Bank Holiday weekend, whether out and about with family, friends and neighbours or quietly appreciating a bit of extra time at home, we wish all our customers and clients an enjoyable time.
